Preparing for Hardwood Installation
General Information
Hardwood flooring is a natural product and variations in color, grain, pattern and texture, etc. occur normally and are not considered defects. Most manufactures of engineered hardwood Floors within tolerances accepted by the industry as standard, which allows for up to 5% defective product (natural or manufacturing related) based on the original hardwood flooring purchase. Be sure to order at least 5% additional flooring material beyond actual square footage requirements to allow for cutting and grading of material. If your installation will be on a diagonal, order 10% - 15% extra material.
Moisture Protection
JMI Flooring highly recommends the use of these products when gluing down the 3/8”, 1/2”, and 9/16” engineered hardwood flooring to concrete slabs where moisture tests indicate moisture content and vapor emission levels beyond recommended thresholds.
The following are sealer and glue systems that offer a manufacturer’s warranty against damage incurred due to sub-floor moisture intrusion.
Recommended Sub-Flooring Installations
Concrete Slabs: Glue-down or floating.
Acoustic Concrete: Glue-down or float.
Plywood: glue-down, float or staple (do not staple over particle board or similar product).
Resilient Tile or Sheet Vinyl: staple, glue-down or float.
Cork: Glue-down or float.
Ceramic, Terrazzo, Slate Or Marble: Glue-down or float.
Preparing for hardwood floors
Removing the Existing Floor Covering
You will need to know how you will dispose of your old flooring before installers arrive. If you are going to remove the old carpet and pad yourself, please leave the existing tack strip down if replacing with carpet.
Warmth & Space, Please
Installers will work in areas other than the room(s) being laid with new flooring in order to prepare and store the new floor covering during installation. Typically, this will be a garage, patio or carport. Please be sure there is electricity available and that the temperature is at least 65 degrees in the rooms to be installed.
Door Cutting
Our installers will remove hinged doors and replace them after your new flooring is installed. If, however, your new flooring is thicker than your old flooring, the doors may need trimming for proper clearance. In this instance the doors will be left off their hinges so they can be trimmed.
Moldings
Baseboard moldings, in most installations, can be left in place. Our installers will work with the molding, but cannot be responsible for breakage and scratches.
Sanding
If your installation requires sanding, it is a good idea to cover all cupboards and furniture in the adjacent rooms. If sanding is to be done, you may want to seal off the room with plastic.
Material Waste
Every installation has material waste; these leftover pieces are most commonly used in closets, or when stairs and halls are recovered.
Empty Rooms, Please!
Rooms and closets that will be resurfaced must be emptied. Please remember, for both your protection and ours, if the rooms are not cleared before delivery, our company will not be liable for any damage that might occur, directly or indirectly, while handling your property.
Dining Rooms & Dens
Remove all your breakables (plates, vases, lamps, and collectibles) prior to moving the actual furniture; make sure all electrical components are disconnected before you attempt to move your stereo, computer, VCR or TV. Our installers are not responsible for reconnecting these items.
Kitchen & Utility Areas
Disconnect your washer, dryer, and all gas appliances. Our installers are not responsible for disconnecting or reconnecting any appliances.
Bedrooms
Beds need to be stripped prior to installation. Installers will dismantle the beds if necessary.
Bathrooms
If vinyl is installed, please arrange for the toilet bowl to be removed prior to the installers' arrival.
